Richard Sherman gave a perfect response to Trump for insulting NFL players
It’s habitual for President Donald Trump to say something controversial about an easy target that’s not around to defend themselves when he is orating. This time Trump decided to take shots at professional athletes who kneel during the national anthem to show solidarity with social justice movements.
During a rally at Alabama, organised for Senate candidate Luther Strange, he told the crowd, “That’s a total disrespect of our heritage. That’s a total disrespect of everything that we stand for. Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, you’d say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. Out! He’s fired.’” The partisan crowd erupted in applause.
It didn’t take long the league to circle the wagons around its players. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who has a reputation for not acknowledging a champion of players’ rights, issued a stinging condemnation of the president’s assaults. “Divisive comments like these demonstrate an unfortunate lack of respect for the NFL, our great game and all of our players,” he said in a statement.
While the executive director of the NFL Players Association, DeMaurice Smith, tweeted, “We will never back down. We no longer can afford to stick to sports.”
However, it was the players themselves who gave a befitting reply to Trump. Seattle Seahawks defensive all-pro, Richard Sherman, who is known for speaking his mind, wasted no time in giving the most effective counter-attack to Trump. He strongly condemned the President’s remarks in one of the most pointed tweets of any athlete yet. He didn’t shy away to call for Trump’s impeachment.
